The Project
The Camden Gas Project
Located approximately 60 km south west of Sydney, the Camden Gas Project is 100% owned and operated by AGL, which holds PPLs 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6.
The Project currently consists of:
- 86 producing Coal Seam Gas (CSG) wells;
- 100 km of gas gathering lines and associated infrastructure; and
- The Rosalind Park Gas Plant, located in the Menangle area, for gas treatment and sales.
AGL employs approximately 70 full time employees and contractors in the area and 45% of the Project's suppliers are locally-based businesses.
History
The Project has been producing CSG for the Sydney region since 2001.
On 9 December 2006, the Minister for Planning approved the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute Wells (Project Approval 06_0138) and the Razorback Wells (Project Approval 06_0137).
These approvals were for the construction and operation of 14 gas wells on the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI) property, 10 gas wells on the Razorback properties, along with associated gas gathering lines and access roads. The EMAI and Razorback wells were drilled during 2007.
In 2009, AGL acquired Sydney Gas Limited, and became 100% owner and operator of the Project.
What's Next?
Spring Farm and Menangle Park
The Camden Gas Project is currently being expanded by the development of the Spring Farm and Menangle Park Projects, which were approved by the then-Minister for Planning in September 2008. The additional CSG wells approved as part of the Spring Farm and Menangle Park Projects are expected to produce enough gas to supply more than 1.6 million average households if the gas was consumed in 1 year. Copies of the full Environmental Assessment are available for download below.
The Northern Expansion Project
The Camden Gas Project's next phase, the Northern Expansion Project, will involve:
- Twelve well surface locations containing up to 6 wellheads each;
- Associated gas gathering and water lines, including interconnection with existing gas fields (such as Menangle Park located to the south), along with central water storage points where required);
- Access roads and ancillary infrastructure, including storage yard(s), where required; and
- Subsurface drilling of lateral well paths within the boundaries of the Subsurface Project Area
Public exhibition of the Environmental Assessment prepared for the Northern Expansion Project was held in late 2010. The EA can be viewed here:

Submissions were received from stakeholders during the public exhibition period and AGL is currently preparing a submission report in response. The Northern Expansion Project will make further good use of the significant local coal seam gas reserves in the area, making it an important project for the NSW economy.
